Радиоактивность, которая, если она присутствует в образце, дает скорость счета, которая может быть измерена (т.е. учтена в качестве превышающего фон значения) с определенным уровнем достоверности. "Определенный уровень достоверности" обычно выбирается равным 95 %, т.е. образец, определенно обладающий минимальной обнаруживаемой активностью, может рассматриваться – с учетом случайных колебаний – как не имеющий радиоактивности на протяжении 5 % времени. Минимальную обнаруживаемую активность иногда называют пределом обнаружения {detection limit} или нижним пределом обнаружения {lower limit of detection}. Скорость счета у образца, обладающего минимальной обнаруживаемой активностью, называется уровнем определения {determination level}.
